PLATELET RICH PLASMA: PRP & PRFM

PLATELET RICH PLASMA

It is a component of a person’s own blood to stimulate collagen and hair growth.
Platelets are small cells in the blood that are involved in the clotting process. When PRP is injected into the damaged area it causes a mild inflammation that triggers the healing cascade.

As the platelets organize in the tissue they release a number of enzymes to promote healing and restoration of tissue. They have also been shown to promote hair growth.

PRP can be used for skin rejuvenation, fine lines, wrinkles, hair thinning as they are rich in growth factors and regenerative cells.

We recommend combining PRP with microneedling as this lead to superior results as collagen in your skin remodels compared to microneedling alone.

PRP can be injected into areas with wrinkles and folds leading to improved appearance.

A small quantity of blood (10cc‐50cc) is drawn from the patient into a syringe. This is a relatively small amount compared to blood donation which removes approximately up to 500cc. The blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate its components (Red Blood Cells, Platelet Rich Plasma, and Plasma) A second spin is required to achieve optimal concentration. At Reverza, we use a PRP collecting system and centrifuge that can harvest up to 5x concentration of platelets compared to 2x concentration in older systems other practices have. A higher concentration of platelets in most studies have more optimal results.

Microneedling with PRP (platelet rich plasma) involves the use of a microneedling device with the application of PRP during the process. We call ours Revamp Facial because it is more refined, safer and more effective than the V@mp_re Facial. Our “microneedles” are not reusable and FDA approved hence zero risk for disease transmission. Our PRP system is better since we are able to harvest more than 2x PRP than most practices. A board certified medical doctor performs the procedure with a good knowledge of skin anatomy and depth. A non-medical doctor should not perform this procedure in Oregon since there are required depths to have good results. If not done properly, microneedling can cause permanent scarring.

There are multiple factors and medical conditions that account for thinning and balding hair. There are certain hair follicles where the stem cells are permanently damaged. Different delivery methods concerning PRP and the concentration of PRP influence outcomes as well. Single spin methods in preparing PRP are inferior to the dual spin units. At our facility, we use the FDA approved double centrifuge approach which yields a higher concentration of platelets and stem cells.

The practical side of using PRP in alopecia treatments is that there are a number of hair follicles that are dormant despite their condition. Platelet Rich Plasma has been shown to initiate hair growth for these dormant cells due to the biological nature of the treatment and interaction of stem cells within the hair follicle. We recommend using PRP in combination with medications such as Minoxidil and supplements like biotin for optimal results.

Platelet rich fibrin matrix (PRFM) is a different approach to delivery of growth factors from platelet rich plasma (liquid gold). PRFM allows delivery of platelets in a steadier and longer state. Beware of practices who advertise PRFM as the “better or greatest” option compared to PRP. PRP and PRFM have different indications or uses. There are situations and areas in the face when PRP and PRFM should not be used.

At Reverza, we utilize platelet harvesting methods that are more advanced than other practices. We also have used protocols that is proven to provide optimum results for your skin and hair with fewer treatments. Skin and hair rejuvenation is a multimodal approach and requires the guidance of a board certified medical doctor.

At Reverza, we have alternative procedures that are bioidentical if you do not want your own blood to be drawn. Please schedule an appointment to know more about your options.
